Project Overview

The general levels of passive screening identified by the client’s consultants were to mitigate several areas in laboratories and communication rooms to Class (1) 1.26µT and Class (2) 3.78µT.

We were also required to include areas for human health protection at 0.4µT and in addition to the above we also supplied and installed a magnetometer screen to an existing building nearby owned by the University.

Case studies – Bespoke solutions

We successfully design bespoke screening by first modelling with our NARDA magnetic field software to accurately establish EMF levels at any given location.  Modelling ensured that funds were not unnecessarily spent on screening areas that did not require to be screened and offered graphic evidence of actual requirements.

Mitigating stray field emanations from a transformer room in one building utilised a clever combination of screening to the ground floor soffit and walls, combined with screening the first floor slab, thus protecting all the vulnerable areas without penetrating the tendons on the pre stressed slab.  The entire screening mass was installed to the outside of the transformer room structure.

A second area required HV trunking at a height of 10.5 metres from the slab. The design had to allow HV cables to be pulled through straight trunking sections in situ. The trunking was designed to be open and accessible at all bends and step changes. These access apertures were fully screened after cable installation was completed.

Both of the above applications successfully utilised our light weight high permeability screening system.

We worked with a Durasteel contractor to ensure that our installed cable trunking could be later fire proofed.
